As a Kid, One of My Favorite Things to Study Was Egyptian History

I don’t claim to be any kind of history buff and I can’t tell you the names of all the pharaohs, but I used to have more general knowledge on the subject. Ancient Egypt is an exceptional society, because it evidenced stair-step evolution. Only a few ancient civilizations had this type of development. Stair-step evolution is where there was a rapid growth in society due to the adoption of new technologies almost instantaneously, in a short period of time. In Egypt, one of these developments was their writing system and another one was their ability to build the pyramids, which has been the subject of much debate throughout time.

About Cleopatra – Queen, Polyglot, Seductress

This song is about Cleopatra VII Philopator, commonly known mononymously as Cleopatra. I touch on a few things about her, like the ambiguity surrounding her death. Some theorize she committed suicide with a poisonous snake, while others believe she was murdered. I don’t claim to know and speak more about how she is a strong queen that led her people in the song. I still mention her death a little bit, because it is a source of mystery and intrigue.

The song is a bit saucy (sexy) and I also mention one of the moments that Cleopatra is most known for, when she seduced Julius Caesar. She was wrapped up in a rug, which was unrolled in front of the emperor. In the song, I say “to win the war I’ll use the heat.” this is a reference to how Cleopatra used her sexuality to gain strategic alliances with Caesar and later, Mark Antony after Caeser’s death. This allowed for Egypt to have a position of strength and sovereignty, when it could have otherwise been crushed in war. The actions of Cleopatra preserved much of Egypt’s culture and protected the country during a period of heavy war. Trust me, you wouldn’t want the Greek army at your door!

Cleopatra Was Regarded As A Pharaoh By Many

“Caesar himself was content with Cleopatra ruling Egypt as the two of them found in each other the same kind of stratagem and intelligence, bonding them together with a mutual respect.” When meeting Mark Antony, she took the awesome approach of dressing as Aphrodite, also called Venus, goddess of love. This form of dress has also been imitated by modern performing artists on stage, like Madonna at the Superbowl in 2012. I feel like Cleopatra is someone that would have been really awesome to meet, because she was so intelligent and sexy. In some ways, you might say she still has an endearing influence of modern applications of mascara. This isn’t all her doing, but her presence in modern popular culture brought that style of winged tips to much of the western world and film featuring her likeness continues to inspire many artists today.

I chose the name Cleopatra – Snake Queen, because of her iconic headdress featuring a serpent. Snakes were also seen as a symbol of sovereignty, royalty, deity, and divine authority in ancient Egypt. Cleopatra’s death was tragic, regardless of whether or not it was self-inflicted, or at the hands of a warlord. However, it could also be perceived as a royal death, because of the symbolism of the snake. Her influence was very positive on the Egyptian people and she saved countless lives through her military alliances. I pose the question “did she ask the snake to bite her?” because this song is about strong women. We don’t know if she chose a so-called royal death over a public execution, or if she was oppressed by a man leading up to these moments. I am posing the question, because of how powerful she was and her personal strength makes it doubtful (at least to me) that she would make such a decision, unless it was her only option.

I Talk A Little Bit About Myself Too

As a musician, all of my music is going to be influenced by my point of view somewhat. I can’t speak for Cleopatra, so nothing I say should ever be regarded as fact (that would also ignore the entire intended purpose of this song – she was a strong woman that I admire). When I say phrases like: “once I wake, I make the same mistakes. Just one more day for me to face,” that comes from my own feelings of existential dread at a time when I felt trapped. I want to emphasize the beauty and strength of Cleopatra because too often women are taught to emulate vapid celebrities, leading to an abundance of self-loathing and also, sex tapes on the internet. Women are just as strong as men and they need positive role models with intelligence, like Cleopatra – she spoke 9 languages after all! Two other women in history that would be great role models for women include Joan of Arc & Queen Elizabeth I.

About The Musical Style of Cleopatra – Snake Queen

This song was a great step in the right direction for me vocally. I think that I started to develop a better voice for rock music, through the creation of this song. I used a drum machine and also some cool synths. I played the guitar in the recording as well. I am not sure if I will perform guitar on stage yet, because I use syncopated rhythms all the time and between synced drums, synced  vocals and synced guitar – it will be struggle to do more than one at once. Initially, I plan to do most performances with vocals only and probably, some dancing.

Cleopatra – snake queen lyrics

Did she ask the snake to bite her?
Cleopatra Cleopatra
Fighting just to keep her lover
Cleopatra Cleopatra
A superwoman leads with grace
Hard to die and still save face
Lovers are the loneliest
Cleopatra Cleopatra

Sphinxed me at the break of day
sands of time I won’t forget
made a vow I read in fire
with oh, so subtle
chills regret
watch me with her evil eye
kept my soul from running wild
naked in my favorite rug
smelled like the Nile lilies of love

Did she ask the snake to bite her?
Cleopatra Cleopatra
Fighting just to keep her lover
Cleopatra Cleopatra
A superwoman leads with grace
Hard to die and still save face
Lovers are the loneliest
Cleopatra Cleopatra

And once I wake
I’ll make the same mistakes
just one more day
for me to fake

Take me, use me
don’t abuse me
sandstorms are my remedy
stash, preserve the inner me
dark clouds say what I can’t speak
into the passion of my dreams
got to ration all of me
to win the war, I’ll use the heat

Did she ask the snake to bite her?
Cleopatra Cleopatra
Fighting just to keep her lover
Cleopatra Cleopatra
A superwoman leads with grace
Hard to die and still save face
Lovers are the loneliest
Cleopatra Cleopatra

Kiss your sexy venom lips
Cleopatra Cleopatra
fangs to wrist you leave me limp
Cleopatra Cleopatra
one more day is too insane
conquering all over again
wish I had a way to numb the pain
look at my eyes and tell me no again

I am the sand and I will blow away
you can’t keep controlling me

I hope that you enjoy this song. I encourage you to embrace other strong women throughout history, as patriarchal versions of history ignore their powerful impacts.

Align Light

This Song Is About Aligning For Societal Progress

We have serious problems in the U.S.A. with divisiveness in our political system. Most people don’t understand that identity politics is often a distraction from real issues that need resolutions. Often, while the mainstream discusses divisiveness in a way that achieves nothing, bills are approved in favor of elitism and tax cuts for the wealthy, as well as business efforts that may destroy wildlife, people’s houses, etc.. If the majority of society could align collectively, it would be very difficult for upper echelons to push everyone around.

I chose to advocate for education in this song, because I believe that the more intelligent we are as a country, the better off everyone is. Crime is reduced when education is more prominent and in turn this leads to more businesses that can employ more people. I believe that we should have a standardized baseline education on the internet, including free English classes for all American citizens. This would in turn increase our GDP and the buying power of American currency within the world, which is usually a good thing.

Positive Reasons For Identity Politics

I can’t deny that identity politics also serves a purpose in some other instances. There are still problems with systemic racism within most countries. Often this results in people receiving fewer opportunities, or being incarcerated. However, if we improved education across the board, that is also one of the best ways to solve these issues with inequality, because there would be more jobs and opportunities for people to hustle off of the streets.

Other things that I didn’t touch on in this song that are HUGE issues are racial profiling by law enforcement and the fact that privatized prisons can sue state governments for millions in taxpayer money for not maintaining a certain prison occupancy ratio. I don’t know why that is legal at all and it often leads to non-violent offenders being arrested for huge portions of their lives, when they may not have even harmed another human being. These are not people that need to be kept away from society and to my ears, that sounds like slavery.

There Are Better Examples For Prison Systems in The World

Regardless of how compassionate you are towards others, you have to acknowledge that this kind of thing affects everyone regardless of their race. In the U.S.A., we really should be emulating countries that have effective rehabilitation systems, such as Sweden and Norway. They can barely keep their prisons filled because they rehabilitate people to go out into the world and get good jobs. Their crime rates have plummeted and everything is more functional than it is domestically. We should be integrating people into society again, rather than using them as slave labor. I find this to be an atrocious violation of human rights and I hope that you will at least fight against this systemic form of oppression, even if you can’t understand any other form of racism.

Note: When I use the word dreamers in this song, that his nothing to do with The Dream Act. Don’t get it twisted, I didn’t even know what that was when I wrote this song.

There Are Also a Few Metaphysical Concepts in This Song

I talk about how we are all connected in a spiritual sense, as well as a political sense. When we empower others, this energy usually comes back to us in turn. If we see each other as enemies, then we won’t be able to work together on common issues.

I use a metaphor about a dragon that partially references the Join or Die snake from the early days of American history. It applies to interactions among people, as well as among states. There is also a metaphor with the dragon Tiamat present in ancient Mesopotamian mythology. When the dragon is slain, humanity achieves power over the Annunaki warlords. The dragon is also covering humanity’s ability to see heaven.

There is also a nod to Prometheus, with the concept of carrying the torch. This comes from Greek mythology and is also the premise for lighting the torch at the olympic games. I refer to the fire as knowledge being passed along and I also say that I like smart women, because I do. I always appreciate intelligence and it makes the world a better place. Help to teach others around you about societal issues and we can all “align in the light,” so the speak.

Align Light by Sage Suede

I’m a misfit
Now where to begin?
Not about my color
Or my tribe
Just want you to read my vibes
I have a lot on my mind
I prefer mysteries not the power decrees

Can’t sum me up in a vignette
You know I’m my own man

I’m a misfit
Now where to begin?
Not about my color
Or my tribe
Just want you to read my vibes
I have a lot on my mind

I like my girls smart
And looking real fine
The kind of goddess
That can help me climb

We don’t need separation
We need more integration
Our economy benefits
When we get more education …

I’m a misfit
Now where to begin?
Not about my color
Or my tribe
Just want you to read my vibes
I have a lot on my mind

We’d all be better off if we aligned

I like my girls smart
And looking real fine
The kind of goddess
That can help me climb

We don’t need separation
We need more integration
Our economy benefits
When we get more education

Don’t need to be the freshest
I am above the dirty hexes
They’re dividing up our dragon
Want to see through all the fog

I’m looking past the dreamers
With the lights off
Take down the torch
And pass the love on

Baby we are all connected
Don’t let yourself get distracted
Time to make it right
So it can shine bright

Hope you enjoy this post. I tried to help bring people together since there is so much media out there bringing us further apart.
Do your best to pass the love on <3

A Pipoca Grande

This is about a relationship I had where we ate a lot of Chicago style popcorn.

If you aren’t familiar with that flavor, it’s kind of like kettle corn with caramel and cheese mixed onto the popcorn. In that relationship, we liked to curl up on the couch and watch TV, while eating popcorn. I had a really good time and this song is reminiscing about that experience. Get yourself a large popcorn and give it a listen! Lol

This is Still a Very Experimental Track

The lyrics are meant to be a little weird and interesting. I realize the bass makes it sound sort of eerie, but that is because there are 3 levels of the bass to make it a deeper sound that is more immersive. At first I only talk about popcorn and then it gets more romantic. I miss those days… I had fun writing this song and I think that it has some interesting sounds. I am always trying to break boundaries and create something bigger than myself, so I hope you can appreciate where I’m coming from.

I LOVE FUNK BRASILEIRO

I still listen to a lot of funk (pronounced funky) that my friends in Brazil send to me. I tried to use the common beat that they use in Brazilian funk within this song, because I love this music. I listen to Brazilian funk on a regular basis because the drums are so much better than American popular music (when they divert from the simple beat). They also take more risks with the electronic sampling and that is similar to the type of music I make, because I also take many risks in electronic samples. I would love to collaborate with funkeiros in the future and I have a lot of respect for this fun genre of music!

Why Are You More Fluent in Portuguese Than Other Languages?

I mentioned this in one other post, but my mom was one of the volunteer Spanish teachers in my elementary school. I learned Portuguese very quickly, because I was exposed to a similar language at a young age. It didn’t take me much effort to get used to the accent and language of Portuguese. At this point, Portuguese has exceeded all of the other languages I speak and it is the language in which I am most fluent, after English. I usually switch to Portuguese whenever I don’t know something in Spanish.

I Also Have a Lot of Brazilian Friends.

When I was in this relationship, I spent a lot of time with Brazilians in Framingham, MA. That part of Massachusetts has a lot of Brazilian residents and even some wonderful little shops that sell authentic churrasco and açai. I love Brazilian culture and I also visited Brazil once for a month. I still have plenty of friends in Belo Horizonte and a few others across the country, such as my ex, a former roommate and a few classmates from college. Someday I will visit Brazil again! I had an amazing time and people were so warm and inviting. I even got invited to a Birthday party during the first week I was there.

The Struggles of Being a Polyglot

When I think about Brazil or a foreign language I speak, sometimes my accent changes. This is normal and I am not trying to be someone else. I also might adapt the way I act in turn, because different parts of the world have a different way of acting (that’s what culture is) and this often exists within the grammatical structure of languages. For instance, in most of Russian culture smiling is off-putting because it is like a horse bearing its teeth. This is a tradition from the soviet union, so nowadays you see a lot more smiling in Russian popular culture and they are strongly influenced by American media.

Honestly, I even have a tendency to change the way I act a little bit within the U.S.A.. I learned to be more aggressive in Boston and you also have to talk much faster than Texans are used to. If a Southerner doesn’t adapt to the speed, then no one will listen to them until the end of a sentence. You adapt to where you are and what you are doing, so it’s normal for my accent to change a bit when I am discussing another language or associate culture. I hope that makes sense; I just kind of anticipate some haters coming after me in the future and think it’s better to explain this reality in advance.

экспериментальная рок-звезда

At The Time I Wrote This, I was Studying Russian

I started studying Russian in middle school, because the women are gorgeous and I stumbled across a lot of Russian pop on YouTube. I went through a long Russian pop phase and I still listen to some Russian & Ukrainian pop today. These eastern European styles have a lot of roots in classical music and they kept many of the best elements of 90s pop during the early 2000s. I also think that the instrumentation from their folk music is a great addition to the style.

What is экспериментальная рок-звезда About?

Well the name is basically two words:

экспериментальная = Experimental

рок-звезда = rock-star

I wrote this song about me, because I am experimental. My Russian is not amazing, so I am expressing who I am primarily in present tense using simple phrases. I may write more Russian songs in the future, but there are still some political tensions, so I am going to wait for a while before working on it. I will need to focus on my English content first, because that is what will catch on before I can expand in such a huge way. If you don’t speak Russian, you can use google translate on any page of this site. It is in the sidebar on blog posts (possibly the bottom of the page on mobile). In Portuguese I speak better, so I use more slang (girias) and it doesn’t translate well, but most other languages should translate perfectly.

I Have Always Had a Passion For Learning Languages

I am a polyglot, partially because I studied it in school, but mostly because I studied hard enough to internalize it in my free time. Russian is a language that I loved the language enough to memorize basic phrases and the alphabet, well in advance of ever taking an introductory class. I don’t consider myself fully fluent in Russian but I understand many of the basic phrases. If you can’t tell already by the randomness of everything I have on the internet, I get bored pretty easily and I tend to switch languages a little too often too.

Russians Are Actually Really Cool

When it comes to politics, the last presidential election between Trump and Clinton had a lot of attacks on Russian people. They used the country as a premise for nuclear war when Russia really wasn’t threatening the U.S. at all. You can even hear their politicians stating this in speeches, but they still took the threats seriously and started doing nuclear drills to evacuate a majority of Moscow and St. Petersburg (note: I wish my government had functional nuclear bunkers, instead of decaying cold war buildings, that mostly have restricted access nowadays).

Russia is actually a very advanced society that is very similar to The U.S.A.. There are still internal issues, but that is inherent in any political system. They are founded on a tradition of nobility and concepts of equality that very closely mirror most other European sovereignties, but it’s up to your personal interpretation, whether or not Russia implements all of these forms of equality. I am not here to judge though, because that would also require a lot of self-reflection that most people aren’t ready for, so I won’t get into any of that.

Without the Need For A Political Enemy, We Are Mostly The Same

I have dated Russians and also been to parties where everyone was Russian. I went to college in Boston, which has a very large Russian population and my school also has one of the biggest demographics of international students. I had more than a few Russian friends in college (disclaimer: don’t you dare blame me for political outcomes in the USA) and they helped me to improve my speaking and my Russian cursive. I only took one Russian class, but I have an appreciation for many aspects of the culture. Most of the Russians I knew were surprised that I had a genuine interest in their culture and they would always ask me why, to which I would reply – I like Russian pop. Then they would laugh because the music that got me into Russian was mostly girl bands. 😅

В Техасе, мы любым водку – In Texas, We Love Vodka

If you are Russian, there are a lot of similarities with Texas. In Austin, we have a local brand of vodka called Titos that is made from corn. It is very smooth and you would love it. This is a lyric that I included in the song to help everyone understand that we are more similar than we are different. I mostly talk about myself in this song, because that is all the Russian I was able to speak. I am also thankful for the edits my friend in Kazakhstan made to my grammar. This took me a lot of tries to read all the way through, because it was quite fast and y’all have such strong R’s. That’s also one of my favorite things about the Russian language though.

Scum of Yesterday

I Was Pretty Angry When I Wrote This

This song is about being independent of anger that has come about from negativity. We all have things that happen in our lives that we have to deal with and this song is oriented with dismissing that negativity. I use the word scum, because it’s something on the hull of a ship that just gets scraped off. Sort of like how you shrug your shoulders, or you dust off the haters – it’s the same idea behind the terminology.

Lessons Learned From This Song

I write a lot of poetry when I feel emotional and so many of the tracks on my demo started out this way. I didn’t realize until after the fact that these emotions don’t necessarily pan out that well for the listener. I used to desire independence from other people’s constructs of me so much, that I didn’t take any real consideration for the listener. This song isn’t too overpowering in terms of the emotions, because it’s written to sound pretty happy regardless. When I say “let it lay with the scum of yesterday,” that’s the same as just letting things go. It should help to overcome anger with a situation, should you choose to repeat the words.

Why Were You So Angry?

I first wrote this track about a coworker that stole my work and then said awful things about me to HR. She had her friend come in and bully me, even though they had nothing to go off of. It was blatant stealing and then she wanted to just slap her work on an article of more than 500 words that I wrote entirely by myself. She didn’t even write any of it, she was purely the editor and she wanted to credit herself because it was about PR. It was really messed up and she went on being giggly and selfish afterwards, with absolutely no recognition of what she had done. After I wrote this song, it really helped me to dismiss those feelings and I’m happy with the way this song turned out. At least I made something good out of that mess of an ordeal.

A Little About Hoodoo and Magic

This video was made independently be me. I know it’s kind of creepy, but that was sort of the point and I made it in the middle of the night.

There is a hoodoo ritual where you break an egg at a crossroads and then you walk away. I broke the egg in this video and sped up the frame rate during the walk over there. This isn’t any kind of curse and you do this when you want to dismiss negativity. Usually before doing so you give the egg your bad energy and it is to deflect negativity (or curses) that are directed at you. At the end of the video, I’m just kind of waving around thorns. Thorns are also consider to be symbolic of protection and they can be laid over doorways or windowsills to keep out negative energy. There is also an owl in the video, which is protective too and fits nicely with the other imagery.

I tagged this post as magic, because of it’s associations with these concepts. I do not advocate any form of cursing, because it will usually come back to you in full force. People have a bad tendency to label and judge others in a way that can often be negative and this is energy that eventually travels back to you. I am aware of dark magic, but primarily so that I can protect myself. If you’ve read what some people say about the music industry online, you will understand why there is a need to be concerned. In this video, it is conceptual and there’s no need to read into it in too much depth. I think that this concept was a little too spooky for most people, but it was a fun FOIL (literary term) to the positive energy of the song.

Scum of Yesterday by Sage Suede

I will let it lay
with the scum of yesterday
I don’t feel distressed
when you get pestilent
I may lack the jewels
but I’m not your stupid tool
When we all look North
the lies are shattered

I will let it lay
with the scum of yesterday
I don’t feel distressed no
when you get pestilent
you can curse and scoff
but you won’t look so soft
reality will hit you harsher

You can berate
go and manipulate
but I won’t take part
in your
deceptive arts

Hey, no way
it’s not right to hate so clueless
let you know now
better to make a dream
than bring to ruin

I will let it lay
with the scum of yesterday
I don’t feel distressed
when you get pestilent
I may lack the jewels but
I’m not your stupid tool
When we all look North
the lies are shattered

No one listens to
your hate chatter
your anti-matter

I hope you like this song! Your support means a lot to me.

New Recordings for DIAMONDBACK

Making Lots of Progress on DIAMONDBACK Demo

I’m starting to get a good track-list going and I expect to get DIAMONDBACK Demo out soon. There was recently a full moon in Leo this past weekend and I couldn’t agree more that I am in a better position to work towards my goals and assert myself, although I tend to be a bit shy. I read about astrology sometimes, although the most useful is probably current astronomical events and I may mention them in the blog, because it’s interesting to me.

Sage Suede is Inclusive of Diversity

I think it’s important that I establish the kind of person I am, because I want Sage Suede to be an inclusive musical act. Even when people have prejudices, I want them to understand that acceptance of diversity is a necessity at my concerts. I want to stand up for what’s right, whenever I see prejudice at my concerts and I hope that my fans will do so as well.

Maybe, Sometimes it’s a bit off-putting

I try to speak out and support progress within society. Usually I talk about this kind of thing on Twitter and honestly, in many ways this has been to my own detriment. I have lost fans while supporting various positive things within society, but I don’t regret that. I am not a politician, so I might not mention everything that it on my mind, but I still want my presence to make the world a better place. Although I try to speak out, I also don’t want to make myself a target, so if you ever see me remove something in retrospect, that’s probably why.

Just a Little Sage Magic

I also believe in magic. I guess that may be weird to a lot of people, but a good way to explain it to non-believers is in terms of that book The Secret. Basically, the book says that what you put out into the world is what you ultimately receive; that is essentially the same thing as pretty much every magical practice and religion (i.e. prayer). I research a lot of different spiritual belief systems and practices, because I find that stuff very interesting. As a result, you will also hear me mentioning magic and magic concepts within my songs. You don’t have to believe in any of it and I’m not starting a cult. I might make more videos about magical practices, but that doesn’t mean that I advocate for it either. Personally, I have seen how much magic impacts my life and I don’t have any doubt in my mind. I don’t really care what other people think about that, it’s just something that I probably won’t stop mentioning in my work.

Happy Valentinesday! I’m spending it alone with myself. #metime #selflove

Songs Re-visited

So I returned to my alma mater, Northeastern University, recently for this recording session and recorded a few tracks. One of my friends reserved the studio for me, so that I could do so, even though I was an alumni – Thanks Jon! I am attaching these two songs to this post because it’s Valentinesday and I want some of the more romantic songs to be out there while all of us single people eat chocolate and maybe cry. If you have someone to lick your toes (for lack of a more interesting semi-erotic metaphor), then that’s great and I hope you enjoy your day too!

Sexy in That Sweater

You can also find the original here, but this version is better imo. It’s about a friend that used to wear sweaters all the time and we were always thrifting for sweaters. I kept thrifting for sweaters afterwards, because we were really close and she taught me about how great the tactile aspect of sweaters are. We were best friends for a long time and I miss that. You can learn more about this song here.

Lazy Sunday with You

You can find the video version of this song here. I didn’t have an audio version of this before, so I’m releasing one now. I mention auras in the song: supposedly babies, young kids, many animals and gurus can see them easily. It doesn’t come too easily to me, as I’ve always had an easier time feeling than seeing things. I’m not particularly oriented towards psychic vision. There’s even a wikihow article on it, if it interests you.

Anyways, I will try not to cause a hullabaloo by talking about magic too much. It is just a common subject of study for me and an influence that definitely plays a role in my songwriting. I’m trying to finish up DIAMONDBACK Demo soon and I hope that you’ll like it. It’s been a lifetime of hard work and experience that’s finally starting to come to fruition.

BIG Cats Out There Are Loving This

Sage Suede – BIG Cats Out There Are Loving This

I used to have a page on this site for submissions and feedback, but I took it down because it wasn’t too useful. I’ll probably create something else like it for collaborations and to submit fan art, since the email submission is a little more difficult. While I was asking people for song concepts, one of my friends requested “more smoked salmon,” so I incorporated it in the lyrics of this song. I didn’t want to turn down that challenge and I thought that it would be fun.

What is Smoked Salmon in This Song?

Smoked salmon is used as a metaphor for something showy and wealth-related. When you think about this song, you can essentially picture fat cats in suits eating salmon. I don’t even really like the taste of salmon that much, although I admire their upstream resilience.

Additional Meaning Behind This Song

I believe that it helps to put energy out into the world in a way you would like things to be. Whether or not you believe that is effective, it still helps to align your mentality with your personal goals. The lyrics in this song are written so that if you repeat them, they will bring more money into your life.

WARNING: Cats can become addicted to Salmon

When I wrote this song, I’d never looked into the details of how cats can eat salmon and just assumed that since cats eat fish sometimes, that it was totally cool. Turns out that they aren’t supposed to eat it often, because salmon lacks vital nutrients and it’s better not to feed them much raw fish, because it can be poisonous. It is better to cook the salmon first and the reason it shouldn’t be smoked is related to the curing process, as they can’t take much salt.

So I guess smoked salmon would be fine if you don’t use much salt but the conventional method of smoking salmon is not cool for cats. I wasn’t a cat owner when I made this and I really made it flippantly, without much purpose. It’s pretty silly and fun, so there isn’t any reason to take it that seriously – but I had to include this disclosure for any cat owners. Also, they can become addicted to salmon and refuse to eat anything other than salmon, so definitely don’t give them a lot. I have heard cats will do this with a bunch of stuff though. When I wrote these lyrics, I had no idea that cats have such delicate salmon-related sensibilities. lol

Sage Suede – Big Cats Out There Are Loving This Lyrics

And you never gave me credit
Because you never read it
I thrifted half my wardrobe
Other gifts from globe trekkers

meditating on the daily
And making my payments
Working hard, making statements
Looking for cheaper rent

And you never gave me credit
Because you never read it
I thrifted half my wardrobe
Sphinxes have me in the mix

I’m floating freely,
rhyming slant
Being my hottest
Like salmon swimming upstream
Being my baddest

I’m upping my own level
each and every day
I like people that vibe with me…

Been years since smoked salmon
Big cats out there are loving this
Turn your 3rd eye on me,
And make me rich

O Pirata Digital

I wanted to write a song about pirates

…because I have a costume from Halloween a few years ago. I already came up with a cool video concept for this and am speaking with friends to try and find two cast members and a video person. I still have this concept in my head now, but unfortunately, I can’t materialize it as easily as I would have liked to.

I Don’t Advocate Breaking The Law

This was mostly written for my fans in Angola & Mozambique, who are the majority of my Facebook fans. I am not in any way advocating piracy in this song- it is just an interesting concept within a song, as well as an important historical occurrence. Within the context of a more European or American mindset, it makes more sense to discuss pirates in terms of digital piracy, thus the name.

When I said “bebendo na rua”, I was thinking about when I used to go to street festivals in Brazil. I learned Portuguese at Northeastern University and also took a class in Belo Horizonte. I became fluent during my brief time in Brazil, where I met a lot of great people there and I really miss it. I am more than happy to have followers in other Portuguese-speaking countries as well, because I have heard some bands from there and they have cool stuff.

I Didn’t Write This Song With a Lame Filter

This song isn’t particularly offensive to anyone, but it also wasn’t written with a filter. I didn’t even stick to one language really. It was mostly written in Portuguese and eventually, I created a version that was fully in English. The Digital Pirate (the English version) is on DIAMONDBACK Demo and it is one of my favorite tracks from the piece. It is mostly about having fun and although it is titled digital pirate, it doesn’t have much of anything to do with digital piracy. Now that I think about it, this song is completely random and people must think I’m so weird. That doesn’t bother me, but I would like to make something that communicates better with people in the future. This song is composed of poetic musings in multiple languages.

O pirata digital
gosta da bixa barbada
bebendo na rua
enloquece pra a lua

Visita a praia
Douradas como os maias
Rebolando com sentido
Tem chique do funky Rio

Witches wanna give me riches
and the Bixas like my pictures
minhas fans entenderam
I have smooth and sultry rock

Gosta de vida verde
Sage Suede canta pra
ideais progressivas,
vida beleza, festival

I love your little quirks
I’ll calm the babbling birds
I wanna see you slay
money each and every day

Still haven’t explained
I’ll be on the winning team
want to have me on your side
I’m already on your mind

This Blog Post is NOT Art

A Little About Me

I was born during a record low snowstorm in Ohio. I don’t really remember living there, but I’ve seen photos. I was a Cesarean section because there was a risk of brain damage, if I jumped out wrong. I won’t go into all of that, but I had good timing. I was a big baby at 11 lbs 7 oz.
I went to a Catholic pre-school in Florida and there were cockroaches everywhere. I was later baptized and I have learned of many religions since then. I won’t go into the details but I enjoy reading about different belief systems. Later in my childhood, I moved to Texas where there were plagues of crickets. Luckily that ended in the early 2000s, because I was in swimming and it was disgusting. I had to do a few meets, swimming through pools of partially-live crickets.

I was that guy in elementary school that was taller than everyone else, so people always treated me like I was older. I’m like the big puppy dog that was always treated like an adult dog, so it didn’t grow up chihuahua. I also hated being a child, because I viciously prefer independence and still crave more freedom for my art. I did sports in elementary school but started band in middle school and I’ll get into that later…

If you want to know more about me you can always comment on any of my social media profiles, or posts on this site. I support people of all backgrounds and have always had best friends of both genders, from all over the world.

Random Life Notes

I have to make music, because otherwise there is no way for people to understand me. I loved languages as a kid. You learn the most about English when you learn a foreign language because you can see commonalities in sentence structure that clarify elements of grammar that generally aren’t explained in native language learning (although, I probably ignored them while learning English).

I devoted years of my life to learning several languages. I was fortunate to be in a public high school with AP classes, but had to work hard to get into college. Much of high school was harder than college for me because I did so much. I had 32 semester hours when I started on a half-tuition scholarship and changed my major 3 times, before graduating in 4 years.

I plan ahead, otherwise I get anxious and I planned ahead to become a musician as a child. I made that decision because I liked foreign music and I wanted a career that would allow me to travel. My first two albums were Deee-Lite’s Greatest Hits and Music by Madonna (side note: I asked Lady Miss Kier to collab and she was too busy, but as a huge fan, I was happy to have a brief chat via email with her).  When I was like 6, I started on drums (don’t play anymore though), then Clarinet in middle school, marched bass clarinet and shredded at classical bass clarinet, followed by guitar, ukulele and piano. For a while, I practiced clarinet for 5 hours a day.

Oh, and in middle school I started learning to make beats but was off-an-on until recently. I have devoted years of my life to this and did several jobs for free to learn to marketing and other skills, such as web design. This website and my music really are the product of blood, sweat and tears – often at my own expense.

No One Else Defines Me

Some people treated me like I was crazy for being different from them, but I primarily grew up in Austin, TX – a place where most people embrace weirdness. I have friends from everywhere and have had trouble fitting in for most of my life, because I am from many places and like foreign things. I don’t always think in one language and I want to make that painfully clear, because I don’t always speak in the same accent. You might find me using a different voice on different songs, but I am always trying to express myself genuinely.

I don’t think that’s weird at all and I don’t feel like I should have to justify it to anyone. I also don’t feel like my music should be limited to one mood, because I’m human and have emotions. I am a multi-dimensional person, as I have expressed in other posts, so I won’t let anyone look down on me on the basis of how different we are. I am a good role model, because I worked so hard to get where I’m at.

I’ve always had friends from diverse cultures and I used to practice Clarinet 5 hours a day, in addition to rehearsals. That number dropped of course, but I wanted to be a Clarinet major through much of high school. I chose to drop clarinet for guitar and piano, which I studied at Clancy’s Guitar School.

NOT Art

This post is not art because it’s just about me. I’m a person and it’s about time people realize that I’m not an object. I don’t want my childhood really to be the body of any of my art, but it still influences me a lot. I live in a pretty quiet apartment complex with a roommate, so with a 40-hour work week, I don’t have many hours to be loud. That’s one of the reasons a lot of my stuff has been electronic lately. Unfortunately, one of the main reasons I was so sad in earlier posts is because living with roommates so greatly limited my capacity for musical expression and some of those roommates were awful enough to attack me for practicing.

A lot of my songs are meant to provoke discussion, but others are just personal and reflective. I like keeping those reflective pieces on here and I don’t feel bad about anything that I’ve ever made, even when it isn’t high quality. I haven’t been performing my original music much and none of these songs are guaranteed to be final versions.Unfortunately, I am limited by financial resources and my student debt is spiraling out of control, so things are still up in the air, until I can make ends meet.

I’ve been living my life to become a musician and I made all of these plans and took these steps myself, one at a time down a very long path. I also took all of the steps towards a professional career and have to dedicate my time to making money, before working on this blog. Sage Suede would not exist right now, if I hadn’t worked for it and taken on a lot of roles to get here.

My Facebook page mostly has followers in Lusophone countries, so I am going to keep making Portuguese songs too.
I am very thankful for the love I receive in regards to my music. I want my fans to know how to handle tough situations, so I try to be edgy but it’s also just been my entire life adapting to new friendships and situations. I am enjoying the experience and progressing outside of music as well. 😉

Lazy Sunday with You

About The Song Lazy Sunday with You by Sage Suede

This song is about a romantic encounter with someone that you don’t know very well. I didn’t write it about one person and it’s mostly about that moment when you meet someone that you really like, but you aren’t sure if they like you back. It starts at that point and then progresses to a later part in a loving, comfortable relationship where two people can do nothing at all and be happy with each other’s love.

Sage Suede – Lazy Sunday with You

Lyrics Lazy Sunday with You:

Shaky Lips
Changing grips
Do you really like me?

Little said your compliments
make me feel in tune
fire read your aura said
let us unite tonight
hold me close and I’ll satiate your appetite

Never been a feel I wanna
read it back and say it louder
shut the door and light patchouli
your hands, you really knew me

You’re something that feels complete
The frothy waves
no editing

Shaky Lips
Changing grips
Do you really like me?

Little said your compliments
make me feel in tune
fire read your aura said
let us unite tonight
hold me close and I’ll satiate your appetite

Shaky Lips
Changing grips
Do you really like me?

Little said your compliments
make me feel in tune
fire read your aura said
let us unite tonight
hold me close and I’ll satiate your appetite

and if you feel discredited
know that you’re my everything
there’s always space for us to kiss
and do nothing at all
