Experimental Vocals & Electro Beats

When I Started Sage Suede, My Vision was Rough & Edgy

I was just a kid in college, learning to create music on my own. I made beats starting in middle school, but wasn’t amazing at it. It took a lot of trial and error, which has led me to improve substantially over the years. I had a lot of musical experience from playing instruments as a kid, but I wasn’t an expert on any of the instruments I played. I also started creating poetry at a young age. I thought that I wanted to be rough, yet smooth and that’s why I chose Suede as my last name.

Acoustic & Electronic Tracks

I started writing many of the tracks on DIAMONDBACK Demo, using an acoustic guitar. A few of the songs, such as Bird Girl, Cleopatra, and How Can I, were later made into electro-alternative tracks. Others were created entirely electronically; I started with electronic beats and then I added vocals with an iPhone.

Not all of them were created with the same amount of care and polish. I rushed to finish the demo by an arbitrary deadline and some tracks probably should have been excluded. It’s rare to ever hear a demo that spans 13 tracks or has so much variety. On 2018 Freebies & Bangers, I tried to release as many tracks as I could. However, a lot of people still haven’t heard my music and switching languages so many times on one release is confusing.

I decided to release a new compilation, just to showcase the best tracks from DIAMONDBACK Demo and 2018 Freebies & Bangers. It is called RAWR and all of the tracks were chosen by my fans. They are so smart and I really appreciate their help!

My New Release RAWR

I have already submitted this track for distribution but copyright for the tracks on DIAMONDBACK Demo has slowed down the process. RAWR will be in all music stores soon. I am not taking down the free releases on my website either!

Vocal Experimentation

When I started out, I didn’t have much vocal experience at all. I even started doing musical theatre for some free vocal training. I enjoyed performing in musical theatre and the people I met, but a lot of the music made me gag. I love rock music, so generally I avoid the cheesier, artificial happiness of many musical numbers (no offense). I actually dropped out of a musical production because of it, Sorry Julia.

Me, being cheesy:

Mumble Rap & Rock Vocals

I don’t consider myself to be a rapper, but as a lyrical poet, I did talk over several of my earlier tracks. I was given feedback by some that it was under-whelming, but I created several tracks with the intention of sounding apathetic. The old Sage Suede, was trying to create music that was still rough around the edges; I wanted to be punky and I don’t like to sound boring, so a bit weird too. I have been influenced by shoe-gaze and mumble rappers started becoming a popular thing while I was working on the demo, so a few of the tracks sound like apathetic raps. I later realized that this wasn’t the best sound for me. I love hip hop and rap, so both genres continue to influence me a lot, but they aren’t a great description of my sound. I like to use some of the vocals I learned through musical theatre, but with a rougher style.

Somewhat during DIAMONDBACK and also afterwards, I started with rock vocals,. The roughest were in “At Mo Power.” I yelled a little too much in that song, but it also helped me to push the envelope and add a little more aggression in my vocals. This was a bigger step in the direction of learning rock vocals, but it also taught me when my voice was too aggressive.

On some of the early versions of ElectroPapi EP, I even did a low heavy metal growl, but I’ve decided not to include that in the final version, because it scared a few of the sensitive acoustic artists at an open mic that I performed at. Kind of pathetic for people to be scared of hard rock vocals, I know, but I still want them to listen to my music.

As a result, my current vocal style is essentially a form of alt rock, but nothing too strong like heavy metal. I hope that people will appreciate my voice some day. I have never wanted to sound like anyone else and I’m constantly throwing myself into the cold (so to speak), in order to improve myself as a musician and break new ground at the same time.

Why Are There So Many Languages?

I love learning foreign languages and some of that poetry came about, while I was in classes learning those languages. Because I started college as a sophomore with 32 credit hours, I had room in my schedule to pursue my love of foreign languages outside of classwork. I am going to move away from creating so many foreign language tracks in the future, simply because it isn’t practical. I still live in the USA, so initially, I will need to focus on English and Spanish. I still plan to make songs in other languages in the coming years, definitely in Portuguese too. Please let me know which languages you are interested in.

No One Is Helping Me With Anything

In the modern music industry, you have to form your sound and crowd, before anyone will consider you for a label. You can pay a producer to get your sound to that level, but honestly, I can’t afford it. I went to college to have a modest income, that barely sustains my rent and certainly doesn’t leave room for excessive music costs. A professional music producer will easily cost you $500 or more per song. Countless artists have created their entire careers with quality producers, when they lacked any musical talent to get there on their own.

I am the opposite of a trust fund baby. I’m still working towards my goals, entirely of my own merit. I had a lot of mistakes along the way and chose to be experimental starting out. I am starting to form my own unique sound, as a result of taking so many risks. I look forward to sharing it with everyone.

What Genre is Sage Suede?

I would classify Myself as Electro-rock or Electro-pop. I have changed my style a lot over the past few years but I am finally starting to find a sound that makes me happy and fits my personal style. You will hear the fruits of my labor in ElectroPapi EP.

ElectroPapi EP is Well on Its Way

I am currently reviewing the lyrics in ElectroPapi EP, to make sure everything is the best that it can possibly be! I have improved monumentally on audio editing and I know that ElectroPapi EP will be mind-blowing, when it’s finally completed.

I can’t wait to share my hard work with everyone! Thanks for following me.

2018 Freebies & Bangers

A picture of me with my friend Simone Riviera

Takin a Sip

You’ll like the smooth synths and the deep bass in ElectroPapi EP. My vocals have improved very noticeably.
On DIAMONDBACK Demo, my vocal style had a lot of variation and my rhythms were mostly metered. I did use off-beat and syncopated rhythms on DIAMONDBACK Demo, but the vocals were intended to be more apathetic than ElectroPapi EP.

I’ve learned a lot more about myself and my limitations. I’ve also been surprised and pleased with how well my musical style is developing.

I’ve been working on Takin a Sip all weekend; it will likely be the third track on ElectroPapi EP.
So far, it seems like the EP will be in English, but I am a polyglot so depends on how my brain is thinking.

Sage Suede is a Musician & Model in Austin, Texas

I live in Austin, TX. I have performed more than a few shows, on radio and live, but most of them were in Boston, MA. I moved back to Austin, TX after college without a car and didn’t have transportation for a few months, so I couldn’t continue performing. During that period of time, I decided that I could make higher quality tracks and started ElectroPapi EP in November, 2017. I’m giving everything extra time to get done, since I’m held to the standard of “artists” with 50 people on an album.

That being said, I will be performing again in the next few months. I just want to finish up the EP first, because those tracks are so much better. I really want at least 2 backup dancers, and you can contact me to apply.

I have practiced my club-style dance hybrid thing a lot, so I am better than I used to be. I’m not a pro dancer, but I have done martial arts for years (which is still a form of choreo), ballroom dance and musical theatre. It’s not all relevant but the way my brain remembers the movements, it comes together with a flow to it. I mostly draw from elements of club dancing and try to incorporate other movements. I would want to work with dancers on routines and would also give them independence for soloing on some songs.

I’m uploading DIAMONDBACK Demo (Re-Mastered) to Stores

I had distribution for DIAMONDBACK Demo, but I released all of the tracks un-mastered in May 2017. This was really just because I couldn’t afford mastering and hadn’t found a solution yet. It also didn’t help that I had no idea what I was doing. I’ve made beats since I was in middle school, so it’s been a long time but there are so many audio concepts that I’ve improved since then. I’ve learned a ton about songwriting and my vocal inflection is world’s better. I am so excited to share ElectroPapi EP with y’all!

I will be uploading the re-mastered version of DIAMONDBACK Demo to sites like iTunes, Amazon MP3, Tidal, Deezer, Spotify and maybe a few others I’m forgetting. I want the mastered version to be available for streaming because I realize that it is more important than selling albums nowadays. I will still offer it on this site for cheaper, because when you buy my music through any other store, I get a small fraction of the full price. I would rather offer it a little cheaper for people on my site, because then I only lose money to taxes. I may need to raise the price a dollar or 2, but only because I have to pay for the song masters to export as WAVs and I can’t upload MP3s for distribution.

That’s All For Now Folks

I am still working on my logo re-design and things are coming together nicely. I am providing the designer with too much feedback and we are constantly re-making the concept.
I’ve improved a lot at coding too and recently made a lot of stylistic, CSS updates to the website. Leave a comment and let me know how you like my site.

I’m doing my best to get y’all new products soon. After I complete the new logo, I’ll just need to speak with suppliers. Then I’ll be able to put more on the store!

If you haven’t obtained all this free music yet, all you need to do is join Saucy Posse Fast Access. Then you will have the password for this page:

If you like this content, please share! It is so hard to get noticed as an independent musician and this is what I’ve been doing my entire life. It’s just been long enough that I’ve worked to be at this point. Sage Suede is officially registered as an LLC now and I am so happy that everything is coming together. 😀

Get the free download bundle! I know you’ll love what I’m creating next.

Shop Sage Suede & ElectroPapi EP

Welcome to my new store Shop Sage Suede!

I will be adding fashion, street wear, music, accessories and other wonderful things to the store. I am currently working with suppliers on setting this up.

ElectroPapi EP

I am working on a new release called ElectroPapi EP. It will be 4-6 tracks and features a futuristic electro-pop sound. I have evolved significantly since DIAMONDBACK Demo, as you can probably tell. When I released DIAMONDBACK, it was just me every step of the way. My music continues to rely solely on my personal growth and my drive to succeed.

I really wouldn’t have been able to make this site without choosing a career in marketing. I have years of experience with designing sites, sending emails and all that jazz from work and that has made all the difference. Because I didn’t have an online presence at the onset, I have had to focus more on the marketing than the music component and there are still outstanding issues with DIAMONDBACK Demo. I released it in all music stores un-mastered, because I didn’t know any better. I used almost no vocal comping, etc..

Check out the mirrored dance video for DIAMONDBACK. I made it of course, with my okay video editing and dancing abilities.

However, My Mistakes Are Good News For You!

I don’t want anyone to pay full price for the demo anymore, especially since I didn’t master it before release. As a result, DIAMONDBACK Demo is 100% free un-mastered through this site. You can also get the mastered version of DIAMONDBACK Demo for only $3 in Shop Sage Suede. I am very generous about sharing with my fans, because your support is very important to me. I am charging $3 for the mastered demo, because it is much cheaper than the un-mastered version and that’s essentially the cost of a single song including tax and yes, the state of Texas is taking a cut of that $3, so I’m not actually earning anything. I was just hoping that I could get enough to cover the mastering fee.

Note: I will be uploading the mastered version of DIAMONDBACK Demo to replace the un-mastered version in other stores.

More About ElectroPapi EP

I am almost done with the first few tracks of my EP. The lead track is called Soft Serve Chillin and you can find the preview below:

Skirt Flirt is another track on the EP, but I haven’t shared a preview yet.
If you dig deep, you can probably find it in one of my recent Live.me streams.

I also shared 2 previews of Takin a Sip (this is the least finished, so it has a lot of potential to change).

Will You Revisit Tracks on DIAMONDBACK Demo?

I haven’t decided if I will remix or re-make any tracks on DIAMONDBACK Demo yet. I am considering doing a new version of Shaky Lips (Lazy Sunday with You). If there is a track that you really love and you would like me to improve on the EP, then please let me know!

I learned a lot from DIAMONDBACK Demo, mostly about audio editing, but also all about sharing my music. It’s not easy at all and it’s really hard to get any support from people.

If you’re someone that really values my work, I highly encourage you to share it! I won’t be able to do touring, until things scale up further. That being said…

Sage Suede Has Grown a Lot.

When I started this website in May 2015, Sage Suede didn’t exist. I didn’t have any music online, except for under a myspace persona called T.D. Maurader (spelling?).  I don’t even remember and it was the name I was calling myself. Before Sage Suede, I also briefly went by the name AJ Bluejay. That’s why you can find an image or two on this site with that name.

I finished DIAMONDBACK Demo in March 2017. In retrospect, it definitely wasn’t finished without mastering, but I had to be thoroughly criticized and maligned to acknowledge that I’m held to a multi-billion dollar industry standard that really isn’t achievable for anyone. I really do mean that, because it’s rare to find independent artists that even make it to my current musical quality, without paying $300/song for each mix and that same price again for every master + 50 other people that make minor edits to all of their tracks. Unfortunately, that’s what people think music is and they laud mega-celebrities to the point of desperation. I wish I could be respected for what I’ve made, but most of the time it’s just a comparison to somebody else.

Since all of that, I now have social media across the internet. I’ve completed a lot more modeling experiences, which is a passion of mine, and I started up my YouTube channel. I really want to help provide people with the cool stuff they’re working on and I’m doing the best I can with what I can afford. I hope that y’all can keep things in perspective, but don’t worry about ElectroPapi EP – it is up to the standards of the music industry, but only because I’ve gotten much better at audio editing, singing, and more! I already have it stuck in my head every day lol.

I’m at ~50K followers now, but I feel like too many of those are for a followback. I wish I had time to look through everyone’s posts, but I don’t and I try my best to be present when I am online (note: if you engage with me, I do my best to look at your profile afterwards ;)). As of late, I’ve been holding off on followbacks because that kind of makes me sad. I try so hard and struggle to get visibility, like the last time I promoted a video on my primary social profiles, it only got 15 more views. That’s awful and it is a trend in social media that it becomes more and more like an advertising platform, as they shift their algorithms to remove all of your friend’s content from your newsfeed. You can blame Facebook for that, because they started it and it’s still happening across social platforms. I’ve never been happy about it as an indie artist.

Anyways, after much self-debate, I have decided to continue following back on Twitter for the time being. My reasoning is that it’s better to have people that follow me for the followback than to lose people that have a genuine interest in my hard work. I would rather followback people that won’t engage than lose out on an opportunity to get to know people that genuinely care. I am not following back on other social platforms because they have low follow limits.

It Was So Hard to Make Everything on This Site

I’ve lost a lot of friends while pursuing these goals. I’ve lost relationships and been berated by others for having an online presence. People used to respect my intelligence more before I got good at styling my hair and I enjoy modeling too. I don’t do this because I’m a narcissist. I don’t need to share my modeling photos and I really don’t need people to acknowledge what I look like. I am working to materialize a goal that I’ve always had and that’s to be a musician full-time. I’ve learned to improve everything at a very fast pace, while constantly being told I’m not good enough, but I know that my main skills are in music. I am a multi-instrumentalist, although I had to focus on the audio production aspects for a while. I didn’t pick up marketing until internships in college and I really learned most of my skills by working (I only took one course in marketing in college). It’s been a really long ride and in many ways, a constant struggle.

I am looking forward to a day when I can be respected for who I am. That might not happen until I die. I don’t really care anymore. I’m tired of people trying to write me off, because they bought into a person that was sold to them for millions of dollars. I don’t have that kind of money and I don’t want to be compared to them. Few of them have any of the skills that I have through working so hard towards my goals. Pretty much everything I do for Sage Suede is outside of my work hours, so it’s like a full-time job and I just want to share my art with people.

I am really excited to share the new store with y’all!

You may or may not know this, but I have good taste in clothes and I am carefully curating every item for the new store. It may not be until next week or so that I get the first new item on the store, but that’s only because I am in the process of re-designing my logo. You will love it, I’m sure. I have design experience but the designer I’m working with is much better than me with illustration and clean images. I want it to be high quality for y’all and I can’t wait for the products to start getting released! In the meantime, you’ll probably start to see some prodfucts without logos.

The style of the new store can be described as street wear that is actually cool. I don’t want to give much detail, because if it’s anything like the last time I got a pair of glasses, 15 people will imitate me the second they see it. I have an innate eye for style that can’t be imitated though and I know that I have a lot to offer the world of fashion. At some point, you will also be able to purchase these products at my concerts.

I look forward to sharing more with everyone! Download the free version of DIAMONDBACK in my store, or help me cover the small fee of getting it mastered. I’ve come a long way since debating my name two years ago and struggling to finish my Demo during college. I am so happy to have you with me on this journey and I hope you’ll check back soon. You can also subscribe to my new email list for access to blog posts and new content one week before everyone else! It’s the tab/pop-up in the bottom right of the screen called Saucy Posse Fast Access.

Demons Want Cash Flow

An Understatement: I Was Not Happy When I Wrote This

There are a lot of 7s in today’s date so what better time to talk about this song. If you read the lyrics or listen to this song at all, then you would know that it has nothing to do with demonology, or the study of demons. If anything, it’s about demons within others trying to oppress your spirit and possibly, even intending to physically destroy you.

Around the time I wrote this song, I met some people that tried to ruin my life. In a nutshell, they tried to destroy everything about me. I don’t plan to perform this song, but I included it on DIAMONDBACK Demo, so that people would know that I was coming from a breaking point. I had to overcome these demonic people and luckily, I won, or I would essentially be dead right now.

I Still Feel Shy & Depressed

I struggled with a lot of depression and anxiety during the past few years. I’m still shy, so it’s taken a lot of practice for me to branch out and become a performer. I am only a bit extroverted to begin with and I’m skilled at marketing and social media, but I don’t crave attention in social settings.

I used to be so shy that I would choke anytime I auditioned for a theatrical role, or did a clarinet competition. I’ve been doing different kinds of performances throughout my life that have led me to be more confident and outgoing, but that doesn’t change the fact that I have struggled with depression. Most of my poetry from my younger years is too sad to share, as were most of my songs when I started sharing music online. You’ll definitely see that in the first few posts on this site. You can also find some of this poetry on SageSuede.Tumblr.com.

Overcoming Difficulties Makes You Stronger

I felt like it was important to share this song on DIAMONDBACK demo, because it shows a little more about negative experiences that helped to shape me into the person I am today. I don’t want to align myself with these feelings, which is why I don’t plan to perform this song (unless people really like it, it has a few likes on soundcloud). These feelings are still a part of who I am, but I actively choose to be happy because it’s better for me. I am trying my best to keep my aura clear and to focus on positive materialization.

Others Will Try to Drag You Down

I want my fans to hear this song, because I have encountered a lot of people in my life that make the self-centered assumption that I am overly-confident, or that I “need to be more grounded in reality.” Some of them will attack us just for acting happy, because they think that our happiness is a sign that we don’t feel sad. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I act happy for the people around me, not for myself. I project happiness outward, so that I will receive it in return. It has nothing to do with how I feel.

Some People Try to Tell Me That I’m “Not Even a Musician, or a Model”

They want to discourage me and tell me that my pursuits in music are futile, by comparing me to the most popular musicians and models in all of human history… That scale is absurd and it’s sad how some people act when they get the internet in front of them. I am a musician and a model, because I have the proof online. It’s what I do, not what they say and I am mostly talking about this now for the benefit of y’all – the readers. Don’t take it to heart if people say that you aren’t successful based on some absurd large scale person that is one of the most famous people of all time. That’s comical, if anything and it doesn’t make any sense.

About The Song Demons Want Cash Flow

This song is not about businessman. I am technically a businessman by profession, so I obviously don’t want to demonize everyone with a cash flow statement lol. I am still an artist in my free time and I am working towards making this my only job.

One Vocal, Acoustic Take

I recorded this song in one take and I didn’t do much editing at all, except for EQ. It is more conceptual, than professionally made and is about my feelings at the time. It is neither reflective of my overall abilities to make audio edits, nor my vocal talent; I didn’t use any comping, which is the industry standard nowadays. Comping is when you take the best vocal clips from various takes and put it together to make the highest possible quality vocal track. I did almost no comping at all on DIAMONDBACK Demo, so my takes are better than people would assume.

This Song Features Many Lyrics About My Inner Struggles

You could call them personal demons as well, but many of these inner struggles were forced upon me by others. I have grown to overcome them, in ways that I never expected and I am thankful to have made it through this very difficult period in my life.

There is a lyric about “my dying drones.” It is in terms of the fact that we are always getting closer to death and most all entertainment industries are youth-centric; that means that it is harder and harder to simply be a part of music or modeling as I age, even though these are things I love to do. I’m not going to give up, just because mediocre young artists will get more attention, simply based on their ability to pull young kids into their fan-base. I’ve been through too much to let others affect the outcome of my life and I am doing this all independently, so it’s up to me to make it happen. None of this would exist right now if I hadn’t worked for it throughout my entire life and it will continue growing, because I won’t give up.

If You Work Hard, You Will Succeed.

No one can tell you that you aren’t capable of something, when you are doing it. Believe in the things that you work hard at, because they are things that you have already achieved. People can try to talk you down, but words can only have so much influence. If you keep working, you will get to where you are going and there’s no reason to ever feel bad because there are people that are more famous than you. It’s sad that artists are constantly being pitted against each other like it’s some kind of Roman circus.

Why is Sage Suede Not More Famous?

I have a lot of student debt. I’m not a trust fund baby that can just buy everything they want. I had to work hard to get into a good college on several scholarships and I got jobs directly out of college through 2 internships and 2 co-ops that I completed during classes.

I wrote DIAMONDBACK Demo While Studying and/or Working Full-Time.

I don’t regret my decision to get an education, because otherwise everything would have fallen apart. I needed to have money to be capable of doing anything and as much as I would love to make Sage Suede my entire life, I had to prioritize the cold hard reality that I need money to survive. I am getting closer to my goals, but since I can’t afford to pay other people to make my dreams a reality, I am still trucking forward on my own. I am very happy for all of my collaborators however. For more collaboratons, check out my videos!

Silly #Halloweencostume

A post shared by sᴀɢᴇ sᴜᴇᴅᴇ (@sage_suede) on

On a random note, I was the Devil last Halloween, because my friend had a free costume in their attic. If you make up any conspiracy theories about that I will laugh, because I just told you why I wore it. I didn’t have any money for a costume at the time and it was just for fun, not to summon some kind of entity.

Sage Suede – The Demons Want Cash Flow

my name
is not fool again
my heart
is not torn apart
my hands
are not slippery
but you can pass smooth
through my fingers

years of clingers
and the social feelers
and the club rat climb
not getting higher
I feel so tired
lost all desire
and some has been wants
to shout until I’m breathless soft

I’m green
suede leather delighter
I’ll make
a light bastion
or it all comes
crashing down

I don’t need the sound
of meddlers in my
dying drones
I’ll wait
until the cake comes to me

I wilt
under the flickering
pires of ire
I’ll fake
that I’m so bougee
but my money is like loose leaf

sometimes I wish
I wasn’t weird
but I won’t disappear

I know
I’m not slow
although the demons want cash flow

their business is built on my pain anyway

I’m happier
when I can think
I won’t let you make me weak

You may have a toxic ploy
but you can’t
use me like a toy

I’ll turn the tide
I’ll strike you down…
into the ground

Let me know what you think in the comments and I’ll create more soon!

Bring my Diamondback

Sage Suede is 2 years old!

Yesterday marks the two year anniversary of the founding of this site. I released DIAMONDBACK Demo in May, 2017. You can find it through Deezer, Tidal, Amazon, Spotify, iTunes, & Soundcloud.

Just an Indie Entrepreneur

As you probably know by now, I have done just about everything for Sage Suede myself. I have performed WordPress design, graphic design, social media marketing, audio and video editing… I wrote all of my songs, played guitar, sang vocals, created the beats on all of my tracks, etc.. Music has always been a long term goal for me and I have been making decisions based around this pursuit since I was a kid. I have learned just about everything I need to know, except for how to get press for my music. This is the last step I need to take before getting consistent gigs and possibly transitioning into music full-time, at some point in the future.

I recently organized a collaboration with my favorite skater brand One Gig Co! See more on my modeling portfolio: SageSuede.com/Portfolio.

Sage Suede is 100% Independent

I am still modeling, but it’s mostly for fun. I am modeling the runway at MassArt tomorrow, which should be fun and generate some cool photos. I enjoy modeling and am mostly using the images for exposure, on instagram, and to showcase my skills for future roles.

As a musician in Boston, I have not met any label representatives in person and am still learning how the industry works. On June 3rd, I have my first booking to play original music on WEMF Radio’s Social Conditioning and have been a regular in random discussions on the program for the past few weeks. The program is based around pushing social boundaries, so it can be edgy in subject matter. They call me true goth on the program and we talk about gothic ideas a lot. True Goth is also a YouTube series I made. It’s sort of a parody of people that take the gothic lifestyle to the extreme. I also like a lot of gothic culture, so none of this web series is meant to be interpreted with any disrespect.

About The Song Bring my Diamondback

This song is loosely based on my life in March and April of this year, when I was organizing a lot of indie modeling roles, as well as some acting.

This Song is About Bringing Abundance Into Your Life

The lyrics are written in a way, so as to bring more opportunity into your life. It’s not just me bragging about myself. I use concepts in magic, where you would speak for an outcome, rather than purely based on the present. Not everything I say is meant to be taken literally, and this song is more about the intention than the situations I describe. I say “8 times” because 8 is seen as a number of abundance and by repeating it, I am seeking to bring more abundance into my life. If you have ever seen the symbol for infinity, it is just like the number 8. ∞

Variety is the Spice of Life

Personally, I think this is one of the best tracks on DIAMONDBACK Demo. I know it is unconventional to include great tracks at the end of a demo, but some of the best songs on DIAMONDBACK are at the end and it makes the demo really dynamic and interesting. It really isn’t conventional at all to include so many styles or tracks within one demo.

What The Haters Completely Misunderstood🙄

You could complain about high pitches, or slight variation in the rhythm due to the bending of the pitches, but that ignores the underlying drum rhythms in the track and the overall experimentation that makes this track so unique. It doesn’t use conventional sounds and it has a lot of buildup, created by the combination of disparate sounds. I mostly just talked on this track, rather than singing, so that wasn’t as rhythmic as my vocals on newer tracks.

More About Magical Concepts in Bring My Diamondback

When I say “Finding time for relaxation, Raising my vibration,” that is about how activities like yoga and meditation help to raise your spiritual vibration. You might think “baloney!” or whatever cheesy word you use to ignore all of the spiritual aspects of reality, but if you actually meditate for long enough, you can feel your vibration rising. To cast a positive outcome, such as the lyrics in this song, you will usually need to be in a heightened spiritual state, for it to be most effective. I have taken meditation and seership classes, which helped me to get better at this and I believe in it, but it doesn’t offend me if you don’t. Just please don’t attack me for including my interest in magic, within my music. Attacking me for considering magical concepts is a total denial of my ability to express myself freely and is an attempted violation of my civil rights.

This state of clear-headedness is similar to the colloquial phrase “zoning out,” where you let go of your thoughts in order to clear your mind. This is the blank slate you need to cast your intention in magic and spiritual practices. Unfortunately, our society is so distracted by unrelenting technology, that most people never fully clear their mental state enough to understand what I’m even talking about. Maybe I can explicate on this further another day. Please keep an open mind, even if you have no interest in these concepts.

Sage Suede – Bring my Diamondback lyrics

Finding time for relaxation
raising my vibration
a creative musician
With a touch of superstition

I’ll sing it so sweet
Huffing over the beat
I’m so experimental
On a whole new level

Haters are in denial
Some even jack my style
I have my way of thinking
And it’s more original

Talking like they know me
And I know they never will
I’m multi-metropolitan
Known all over the world

Bring my Diamondback
8 times my last casting…
Booking photoshoots each week
Doing some acting

Bring my Diamondback
8 times my last casting..
Been building my skills
For decades my passion

Finding time for relaxation
Raising my vibration
a creative musician
With a touch of superstition

I’ll sing it so sweet
Huffing over the beat
I’m so experimental
On a whole new level

Haters are in denial
Some even jack my style
I have my way of thinking
And it’s more original

Talking like they know me
And I know they never will
I’m multi-metropolitan
Known all over the world

Bring my Diamondback
8 times my last casting…
Booking photoshoots each week
Doing some acting

Bring my Diamondback
8 times my last casting..
Been building my skills
For decades my passion

Everyday’s a masquerade
I’ve seen enough of it…
My music is something new
Not so repetitive

I like my stuff a little rough
Edgy with deep bass
Take a risk, I’ll make you rich
Already making waves

Finding time for relaxation
raising my vibration
a creative musician
With a touch of superstition

I’ll sing it so sweet
Huffing over the beat
I’m so experimental
On a whole new level

Haters are in denial
Some even jack my style
I have my way of thinking
And it’s more original

Talking like they know me
And I know they never will
I’m multi-metropolitan
Known all over the world

Bring my Diamondback
8 times my last casting…
Booking photoshoots each week
Doing some acting

Bring my Diamondback
8 times my last casting…
My fans are really smart
They like my art
They have my heart

Scum of Yesterday

I Was Pretty Angry When I Wrote This

This song is about being independent of anger that has come about from negativity. We all have things that happen in our lives that we have to deal with and this song is oriented with dismissing that negativity. I use the word scum, because it’s something on the hull of a ship that just gets scraped off. Sort of like how you shrug your shoulders, or you dust off the haters – it’s the same idea behind the terminology.

Lessons Learned From This Song

I write a lot of poetry when I feel emotional and so many of the tracks on my demo started out this way. I didn’t realize until after the fact that these emotions don’t necessarily pan out that well for the listener. I used to desire independence from other people’s constructs of me so much, that I didn’t take any real consideration for the listener. This song isn’t too overpowering in terms of the emotions, because it’s written to sound pretty happy regardless. When I say “let it lay with the scum of yesterday,” that’s the same as just letting things go. It should help to overcome anger with a situation, should you choose to repeat the words.

Why Were You So Angry?

I first wrote this track about a coworker that stole my work and then said awful things about me to HR. She had her friend come in and bully me, even though they had nothing to go off of. It was blatant stealing and then she wanted to just slap her work on an article of more than 500 words that I wrote entirely by myself. She didn’t even write any of it, she was purely the editor and she wanted to credit herself because it was about PR. It was really messed up and she went on being giggly and selfish afterwards, with absolutely no recognition of what she had done. After I wrote this song, it really helped me to dismiss those feelings and I’m happy with the way this song turned out. At least I made something good out of that mess of an ordeal.

A Little About Hoodoo and Magic

This video was made independently be me. I know it’s kind of creepy, but that was sort of the point and I made it in the middle of the night.

There is a hoodoo ritual where you break an egg at a crossroads and then you walk away. I broke the egg in this video and sped up the frame rate during the walk over there. This isn’t any kind of curse and you do this when you want to dismiss negativity. Usually before doing so you give the egg your bad energy and it is to deflect negativity (or curses) that are directed at you. At the end of the video, I’m just kind of waving around thorns. Thorns are also consider to be symbolic of protection and they can be laid over doorways or windowsills to keep out negative energy. There is also an owl in the video, which is protective too and fits nicely with the other imagery.

I tagged this post as magic, because of it’s associations with these concepts. I do not advocate any form of cursing, because it will usually come back to you in full force. People have a bad tendency to label and judge others in a way that can often be negative and this is energy that eventually travels back to you. I am aware of dark magic, but primarily so that I can protect myself. If you’ve read what some people say about the music industry online, you will understand why there is a need to be concerned. In this video, it is conceptual and there’s no need to read into it in too much depth. I think that this concept was a little too spooky for most people, but it was a fun FOIL (literary term) to the positive energy of the song.

Scum of Yesterday by Sage Suede

I will let it lay
with the scum of yesterday
I don’t feel distressed
when you get pestilent
I may lack the jewels
but I’m not your stupid tool
When we all look North
the lies are shattered

I will let it lay
with the scum of yesterday
I don’t feel distressed no
when you get pestilent
you can curse and scoff
but you won’t look so soft
reality will hit you harsher

You can berate
go and manipulate
but I won’t take part
in your
deceptive arts

Hey, no way
it’s not right to hate so clueless
let you know now
better to make a dream
than bring to ruin

I will let it lay
with the scum of yesterday
I don’t feel distressed
when you get pestilent
I may lack the jewels but
I’m not your stupid tool
When we all look North
the lies are shattered

No one listens to
your hate chatter
your anti-matter

I hope you like this song! Your support means a lot to me.

Fort Point Open Mic Night

Fort Point Open Mic Night

I finished editing an acoustic performance from Fort Point Open Mic Night at Internal Matter. The editing isn’t particularly good, because well, there isn’t much you can do about low quality video. I was having issues with the MTS file format but I found a workaround.

Performance at Internal Matter

I enjoyed playing at Internal Matter and would love to play there again. Unfortunately, this bar isn’t around anymore. I had to leave after performing and eating, because I had a final exam the next day and I needed to study. I wish I’d had more time to talk with the cool artists and locals in attendance. People seemed genuinely interested in meeting me and I should have stuck around. Nonetheless, I enjoyed playing at Internal Matter and am hoping to play more open mics in Boston when I finish DIAMONDBACK Demo.

I Used To Work in Fort Point

I was particularly happy about being a part of Fort Point Open Mic Night, because I used to work for a small business in the area and was personally involved in helping to market and grow the community. It’s a little too expensive for me to move there, but I really liked the environment. I have met more than a few of the business owners in the area and they were all very kind. I even went to business meetings at the Boston Tea Party Museum and Menton, which were both really cool. I miss that internship a lot, actually. I learned a lot about building websites and many of the skills that aided me in creating this blog.

Lindsay was especially helpful as hostess and an organizer for the event. You can find more about her work on her website baernaeked.com (I am not sure if this site exists anymore, because I’m getting a DNS error). I was also excited to see the video was re-posted by The Fort Pointer. Kind of a random thing if you don’t know who that is, but they are probably the most famous person in Fort Point.

Changes to the Songs in this Performance

Mob Mentality

I made improvements to the first song, which I was going to call Mob Mentality so it will sound different in newer versions. This is just because of some of the unintended connotations of a few metaphors and other improvements, based on further revision. I don’t think I have another recording of that song yet.

Just Got Tipsy

I partially wrote Just Got Tipsy, because I knew I would be singing while people were drinking, although it also vaguely describes my life in Boston and materialism. I only changed the final phrase in this song. Just Got Tipsy is also a track on 2018 Freebies & Bangers.

Sexy in that Sweater

I recorded Sexy in that Sweater as it is performed here. Didn’t actually make many changes to this, except for the vocal effects I used on some versions of the song.

Lazy Sunday with You (Shaky Lips)

The last song I performed was Lazy Sunday with You, although the recording was cut short so you won’t hear it in this video. A little weird without the finality of this set, but you can find that song elsewhere on the site now. Disappointing, because that was also the most well-received song in the set and it got a lot of applause.

Quality Doesn’t Phase Me

I recorded this performance and wish the audio could have been a little better, but I still enjoyed it a lot. The quality doesn’t stop it from being enjoyable and I hope that my real fans will still take some time to give it a listen. I know it’s hard to hear me, since this was recorded with a camcorder, and an iphone when the camcorder died on the last track. In the future, I want to pick up audio near the stage. This was my first live performance of my original material, so it was important to me.

As a random tidbit, I got a skateboard shortly after this show from a cool brand called One Gig and carried that around town. They were really nice and I like their design, so I definitely recommend them. At the time, I had still only played one gig and I think it’s cool that it says that on my board.

Update: I also modeled for One Gig soon after. Find it on my modeling portfolio.

Meet Sage and Musical Challenges

Never Give Up on a Challenge.

So many of us have grown accustomed to being catered to by businesses and expect to get things handed to us by a consumerist society (especially in the USA).

Personally, I have had problems in the past with giving up on difficult projects due to their complexity and my level of inexperience. This applies to Sage Suede, as well as a lot of other things, like when I took pre-AP physics in high school. Just because something is hard and you don’t know how to do it, doesn’t mean that it is unattainable. You will achieve so much more by working towards that goal, even if you never get there.

If you really want something and you want it badly enough, you’ll find a way to make it happen.

We are forced to do difficult tasks at school and during work, but most of us don’t want to get off the couch as soon as we get home. This is due to exhaustion as much as laziness, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make small steps on a long journey. Most of the things that are worth doing in life are hard to do.

There’s no reason that we can’t achieve the big things we want to do, in addition to the ones we’re forced to do. You’ve already proven yourself throughout your life with all the tasks you had to do, so why not apply yourself to a challenge that you really love?

I Started This Blog in May 2015

I created this blog to work towards a lifelong passion of mine. I started learning to read music and play instruments as a child and have wanted to be a musician for most of my life. Now, I am content as a Digital Marketing Associate but still feel that music is an important part of my life and continue to pursue it as a way to express myself. I have learned marketing, social media management, basic web design, audio editing, and even some video editing in pursuit of this goal. I’m still working all the time towards making my dreams a reality.

Little Baby Steps

Sage Suede, just like any large goal consists of a series of small steps, spaced out over time and still requires me to work through challenges in order to make my increasingly larger vision into a reality. Below is an interview conducted by my friend and former co-worker, Nam Namm. He is a professional in marketing and enjoys doing video production in his spare time. You can find more of his work on his YouTube channel. I am really awkward, but I feel like it is an accurate depiction of me and many of my friends will recognize my demeanor. This is one of the first interviews I’ve ever done for my music and I’m glad to be moving in a positive direction.

I’m still working on tracks and the live recording from Fort Point Open Mic Night will be up next week. Thanks for visiting!

Clothing Line

Sage Suede – Work X Life X Clothing Line

My first live performance as Sage Suede will be around 7pm at Internal Matter for Open Mic Night! Fort Point on 03/31.

I took a while to ponder my career path and I am happy to be in a place where I can pursue several things at once and have a steady income. I have questioned the idea of becoming a musician because I didn’t want to create music for money at the expense of my artistic expression. However, since I have a day job, I don’t have to worry about that unless music becomes my only job. I suppose that is the end goal, so I will be very happy if I get to that point someday. Either way, I am still creating a lot of interesting stuff and I’m excited to share it with y’all!SWIM mermaid

I Want to Start a Fashion Line

Another idea I have for the future is a fashion line. I’ve been interested in designing for fashion for a long time and had some ideas for clothing yesterday, while sardonically doodling the Starbucks mermaid. This isn’t something that I’m ready to do just yet and I am mentioning it now because it is something I will do eventually.

Experimental Electronic Music

I made a few experimental electronic tracks in December while looking for a new sound. At the moment I am still interested in developing a grungy electro-rock sound, but I have been playing a lot of acoustic music since returning to campus in early January. The open mic night on the 30th is also acoustic. I have posted two of these songs on Soundcloud, but I need to go through the others because there are about 12 others. I’ll probably cut up most of these experimental tracks and integrate them with acoustic songs. Note: I had to remove some of them, because of Soundcloud’s upload limit and my new songs are better.

The song below is electronic and doesn’t have any lyrics. I composed it using Ableton and I really like some of the sounds, so I will probably sample it some day in a more completed track.

There is Always a Struggle with Music

I will record more music soon. For some reason, I’m having issues reserving the recording studio at Northeastern. I may just have to wait to do production from home, when I can get my hands on a microphone. I have several songs that are most of the way done in terms of vocals and acoustic. I’m not working on DIAMONDBACK Demo all that much and have slowed down on production because there is so much more that I have to learn and set up at the same time. I’m still working and taking classes as well.

I have already scrapped a few of the songs that I planned to use on DIAMONDBACK Demo. I will probably record/perform a few tracks acoustically while others will have an electro-rock vibe. I’m not set on one image, but I will be working on my own clothing line to some extent. I want to unify and empower people through music and provide people with a new way to express themselves through fashion. I am hoping that people like the idea because it could make for some really cool conversations. I want to make something that is bigger than myself and I’m glad to be moving in the right direction.

Sage Suede Charcoal Sketches

Recently, I also started drawing with charcoals. I am not the best visual artist and I am much more skilled at music than art, but it’s fun to do. I think it is a cool addition to the website. I might even consider replacing many images on the site with drawings, but that will take some time.

Hoping to record the performance coming up.
As always, thanks for checking back and there will be more music soon!

It’s Alright (Fall in Love Again)

This Song is About Opportunity

When I first wrote this song, I was coming back from a depressed period in my life. I wrote it after Never Meant to Fall into… and honestly, it could not have been a more appropriate time. Summer was returning after a very cold winter and I was starting to get involved in modeling at school.

I was running a lot and averaging around 6 miles each run. I don’t run as much now, because I am a hard gainer and this kept me skinny for a long time. Some of the things that I enjoyed during this time were Boston Pride 2015 parade and Squeezebox Slam 2015. Pride was really liberating for me and I think it was my first pride. In Boston, I want to say most of the city is gay, so there is always a huge turnout and even Elizabeth Warren attends annually.

When I finished the song It’s Alright (Fall in Love Again), I wasn’t in a relationship. I think I had broken up with my girlfriend of 5 months a few months prior. She was great and I can say for a fact that she was one of the most beneficial relationships I have ever had.

I wrote this song about love in general, but I’m sure that there were a few people that were really on my mind. I was still sad, but I was in a better place than I had been before and in retrospect, I can understand that I got to that place by being with people that treated me right. Love is something that is unfortunate to lose, but it can be found anew almost anywhere. You shouldn’t waste it and it’s sad how often relationships fall apart for mundane reasons. However, when you think about it, it is inevitable that you will eventually fall back into love – even when you feel empty at present. In the end, if you lose it all, then that just means that the love lost was worth living. The more it hurts, the more meaningful the experience was for you and that is something to cherish, regardless of how much pain it may cause.

Sage Suede – It’s Alright (Fall in Love Again)

It’s Alright (Fall in Love Again):

I never said it would be forever
You had me on a tether
I used to love you at your leisure
I never knew why or whether we would

/Chorus/
Fall in love again
It was so long ago I held your hand
If we can resolve our differences
If we can stay in present tense

I don’t know what’s the matter
Things have never been better
And if your lips want mine
Maybe it’ll happen one more time
to

//Chorus//

Your pepper print dress
Waves to me you’re gone
Time was short
But for me it felt so long
Fingers so soft,
I want them in my palms
I have never felt so enthralled
to

//Chorus//

But one day
I’ll find my heart turned gold

It’s alright
It’s alright to lose it all

I know that most of my earlier songs are a bit sad, but I was speaking from the heart. Thanks for listening.
